Punishment

Punishment

the women single out his infancy

exile that miserable man

Punishment rain upon the ass

great men can err.

Although I am certainly not the type to craft sappy love poems or optimistic views of the world, I did not expect this poem to turn out as dark as it did. Even the colored pencil marks look angrily scribbled. So I apologize for what looks like an angry tirade on men in society. However, in my defense, the few pages I selected discussed a man going off to prison, so I didn’t have too much to work with.

That being said, I felt restrained by this sketch assignment. I saw the words on the page, but I couldn’t figure out how to put them together in a witty way without needing another word or two. Perhaps choosing a different novel, or a different genre altogether—like a textbook page—would make this assignment more fruitful or enjoyable for me.

Despite the cons, I could see how this type of media repurposing could take many different paths. Something I pondered was taking sentences or phrases from several different books or magazines and putting them together in a semi-cohesive piece. Although something like that is reminiscent of the Mean Girl’s Burn Book, I think it could be an interesting derivative of this assignment.
